Monday….. Where is Heather?

“Mentally, physically and emotionally we are the same. We each have the potential to good and bad and to be overcome by disturbing emotions such as anger, fear, hatred, suspicion and greed. These emotions can be the cause of many problems. On the other hand if you cultivate loving kindness, compassion and concern for others, there will be no room for anger, hatred and jealousy.”  – Dalai Lama

So much going on in the life of Heather.  Heather the photographer,  Heather the nursing student,  Heather the mother, Heather the wife, and Heather the friend.  As I sit here, at my nice clean desk, with my daily dose of Greenberry Shakeology, I read that quote over and over again.  So many meanings but meanings that need to be clarified in my head.

My business is slow.  Not going to lie.  It could be better.  Am I stretched too thin with other aspects of my life, yes, without a doubt.  Am I making the right decisions, maybe, maybe not.  Am I good enough to be in this saturated photographer area?  Maybe?  I like to think that I am.  There are so many photographers in the Capital District, SOOOOOO many.  All fighting to be successful.  I’ll be the first to admit I’m not in the “in crowd” of photographers, nor do I want to be.  I’m still learning.  I still make mistakes…. I will always make mistakes.  Even the “pros” make mistakes.  What I’m trying to say is, I don’t care that I’m not one of the “cool kids”.  I am me.  Nor am I trying to be someone I’m not.   I’m on my own journey and I’ll get there someday.

I have my regulars whom I love with every ounce of my being.  I appreciate them more than they will ever know.  But, I LOVE the newbies too.  They find me through word of mouth, through random Google searches, and me being out and about.  People book me because I’m me.  People also DON’T book me, because I’m me.  I’m loud, kinda zany, kinda cooky.  I love natural light.  Anything natural – natural light, poses, expressions, colors, yeah, natural.  I’m a sucker for sweet things, no not chocolate, more like Starbursts and Skittles and Cherry Garcia Ben and Jerry’s.  I love my cameras and they fit perfectly in my hands like they were meant to be there all along.  They are my other children.  I am silliness and ridiculousness but I am snotty and moody all at the same time.  I have an awful poker face and can’t lie to save my life.  And my family, they are my life.  As chaotic as we are, that’s how it is.  We are nuts, completely loose screws, and I love it.

I love to help people.  My passion is people and making them smile.  I won’t give away any of my big things that I do because it isn’t about that but I love to do things for organizations and people that are doing good things.  I LOVE doing things for mamas to be, mamas of multiple babies, mamas who need a shoulder, any mama.  And, I LOVE BABIES!  (shocker, I know).  So, if given the opportunity to photograph Moms and Babies, I AM ALL OVER IT!  I am a story teller and I love telling people’s stories.  Weddings, families, people, friends, children, I love it all.

I know, I’m wandering past the point of the quote but only sort of.  I’m full of emotion lately.  Full of feelings I didn’t know I had.  Physically, I’m getting into shape instead of the shape ROUND.  Eating healthier, exercising, and living wholly.  With a side of mozzarella sticks and a Pepsi from time to time.  Mentally I’m SPENT.  Nursing school is no frackin’ joke.  I live, breathe, bleed, and sweat nursing school.  I have no time for friends which is so sad since they are the ones who ground me.  But, I do have a few friends who get it and who still love me anyway.  Knowing that when I graduate, I’ll still be the same Heather, and have more time (maybe?).  They send me little notes saying they are proud of me and that they love me.  They push me when I need pushing without me even saying I need a swift kick in the pants.  They are my friends.  There are others that don’t get it, and that saddens me.  But, in the end, I have the important people in the palm of my hand and they are my heart and soul.  Some have been in my life for a long time, others just recently.   And there are a select few who fill my heart with so much love, support, passion, and drive, I can probably write a blog just on that…..  Maybe I will.  Maybe there will be a photo shoot with those peeps…. who knows.

I’m going to wrap this up for today…. there will be a part II.  I just needed to write today.  I know, this was totally random but it is where I am lately.  Pieces of me all over the place.  Completely scattered.  So much good, a little bad, some fear and anger, but so much love and kindness.  I am me, not anyone else.  Take it or leave it, I am me.  ❤

Now, how about some pictures!  A few teasers for upcoming posts….

I love my clients!  I love my clients even more when I’ve known them for a very long time.  And, I love them EVEN MORE when they trust me enough to take me with them to their destination wedding!  I was so excited to find out that my friend Kelly was engaged.  When she posted on Facebook that she was getting married, I jokingly sent her a message that I knew a great photographer….. well, the rest is history!

We headed down to Washington Park in Albany to capture their engagement excitement!!!

This won’t be the last time you see Kelly and Rich!  We’ll be headed to Montego Bay, Jamaica in July to celebrate their MARRIAGE!

One of my favorite weddings from last year…. Second shooting with Amy – Kristine and Joel

Really, this was one of my favorite weddings.  First, I love the Appel Inn.  Second, I love shooting with Amy.  Third, Joel and Kristine were awesome to work with.  Of course, I was second shooting so I started my day with the guys.  But, I did get to shoot some formals and details, my faves!  There were details everywhere!  I loved the linens, I loved that the family made the cupcakes, I loved their signature drink (no, I didn’t have any!), and the love that surrounded these two was just awesome.  So, here ya go!  You tell me what you think!!!

Joel waiting for his bride – first look!  Love it!

Here she comes!

Second shooting with Michelle Lange – Marty and Jackie

I am so fortunate to work with so many wonderful photographers from near and far.  Michelle Lange is a photographer from NYC, and also a Showiteer, like me.  What’s a Showiteer you ask?  Well, we are a very fun group of photographers who, for lack of better words, ROCK!  LOL!  I’ll do another post on Showit/PASS very soon.  Anyway, Michelle posted that she was looking for a second shooter for a wedding upstate, more upstate than me.  So, I said I was available and she picked me to help her out.  YIPPEE!!!!  So the day came for Marty and Jackie’s wedding and I drove up to Johnstown and met with the guys.  Photographed them getting ready, some headshots, details, and then off to the church we went to capture Jackie and Marty’s first look and then, the ceremony!  As typical with most second shooter gigs, I leave after the formal shots are done so you won’t get to see the reception details on my blog.  I’ll see if I can find Michelle’s link to those. 🙂  Marty and Jackie are adorable, and so in love, just warning you!

Besides cufflinks being an issue, the guys couldn’t figure out the whole black socks thing…… It was VERY entertaining!

Second Shooting – Guys and Details

As you know, I second shoot for Amy, quite a lot, and, I LOVE IT!  But when people hear that I “second shoot” they mostly just shake their heads and say “oh, that’s cool”.  Most of the time, I am sure they have no idea what that means.  Well, lucky for you all, I’m going to share with you what that means.  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE, LOVE , LOVE being the lead photographer and shooting solo but the pressure is totally different when shooting for another photographer. The deal when working with Amy is that I hang with the groom and his guys, and photograph them getting ready.  No, no, no, I do NOT watch and stare as they get dressed.  I’m there to capture the fun, anxiety, jokes, the best man trying to chill the groom out, you know, the fun stuff.  Cuff links, shot glasses, shoes, head shots, group photos, ties, and nervous smiles.  Here are a few examples…

The other part of second shooting is photographing the details.  I have to admit, this is my favorite part of the job.  Flowers, rings, jewelry, church decor, reception details such as glassware, cakes, favors, place cards, and did I mention flowers???  Usually while Amy is photographing some of the formal shots, I run (and yes, most of the time I RUN!) to the church or ceremony spot and then the reception area to shoot those details.  It is mostly me, myself, and I, alone with the details, in the calm before the party, and I just soak it all in.

And, from time to time, I do get to shoot some of the formal shots and hang out with the ladies.

No matter what I get to photograph as a second shooter, I learn a ton, every. single. time.  And, every opportunity I have to work with other photographers, those experiences make me a better lead photographer, which I LOVE!  I really do have the best job ever, well, jobs!  🙂

Headshots for the up and coming…… Darron Leddick, Photographer

As we all know, 2012 was a pretty big year for me and my business.  The stress and anxiety going into building yourself up as a reputable photographer is hard work, and well, just overwhelming at times.  There were a TON of fun parts though, like networking with a ton of different people, learning, and making great friends.  Darron is one of them.  I met Darron through Amy one night on Facebook, of course.  We were having a country music stand off, listing country songs that out-ranked others.  I think I won, I’m sure of it.  After our standoff of all things country music, Darron and I met at Starbucks and arranged for me to do his headshots.  I had never done headshots before, so I figured, why not!  Well, you can tell that it went well.  We had a blast, chased a turtle with our cameras, and laughed a lot.  Darron is going to be an awesome photographer.  He is passionate, excited, and in love with all things photography.  This won’t be the last time you hear about Darron.  Here are the pics!!  And here is his Facebook page too…. check it out!  Darron Leddick Photography

My fave pic – this is Darron’s personality to a T!  🙂

Thanks, Darron, for letting me photograph you!  I had a blast and can’t wait for this year!  You are going to work your tush off, more than you ever thought you could!  🙂 HA!  Get ready to work!

My gig as a second shooter Part 1 of MANY! Lloyd and Fawn are MARRIED!

I have this great gig as a second shooter.  Of course, with Amy aka best boss ever!!!  I get to go to all of these amazing weddings and take pictures without the pressure of being the lead gal.  It is GREAT!

One of my weddings in 2012 was for Lloyd and Fawn.  They are the cutest couple!!!  Fawn was really going for a vintage look and she totally nailed it.  The wedding was just stunning at Proctor’s Key Hall and a dream of a place to take pictures!  As a second shooter, Amy goes with the gals as they get ready and I get to go with the guys.  So, you will see many more pics of the gents in my sessions but not because I favor them, that’s the job.  But, all of the grooms I have worked with have been so much fun and I laughed A LOT, especially with Lloyd and his guys.  Here ya’ll go – some fun pics from our day!

Thank you Amy for allowing me the honor to work with you, and thank you to Lloyd and Fawn for

including me in your amazing day!

It’s been a year! WHAAAAT????

So, I’m sitting here on Facebook like I am every night, talking to Amy.  You know Amy, Amy Hedges of A. Hedges Photography.  In our chatting tonight, I realized that I have been working with her/for her for a YEAR!!!!   I can’t even believe it.  To think that a year ago, I went from “stalking” her photography page to working with her, I never would have thought.  I had always asked her for little opinions and advice from time to time but never did I EVER think that I would someday work with her.  She has been my photography idol for a couple of years now and when she posted that she was looking to hire a second shooter for 2012, I really hesitated on sending in my portfolio.  You know me, Miss Self Conscious!  And then, I sent it and two weeks later we were chatting at Starbucks, planning the year.  And now tonight, we joke about all the craziness of last year and how much fun the future will be.

I am so grateful for all that she has taught me in the past year.  I went from using a standard, beginner DSLR to jumping right into having TWO pro Nikon DSLRs and an array of lenses and equipment.  My magic credit card thanks her, but my husband so does not. 🙂 I am pretty much fluent in camera-speak, although I still have a ton to learn.  Did I mention I can’t believe it has been a year!!!????

We went to go see Jasmine Star (another photographer idol!) in NYC together – our first field trip!  Then we took on wedding season, and what a blast it was!

We don’t have many pics of us together because we are very serious when we work, LOL!  NOT!  But, here are a few.  Thanks for a great first year, Amy!  I’ve had a BLAST and can’t wait to see what is ahead!

Secret Wedding – John and Patti

Yes, it was a secret wedding!  I have this fun photographer pal, Rob, who sent John my way for a wedding but it wasn’t clear as to whose wedding it was.  Rob and John knew each other, but John didn’t tell him that it was HIS wedding.  So, John and I chatted and realized we knew a lot of the same people and loved the fact that none of them knew of their upcoming nuptials.  You see, John and Patti were no ordinary couple.  They had a wonderful relationship for 14 years and most everyone thought they were already married.  Their plan was to have only their matron of honor and best man, the pastor, and myself attend the wedding.  HOW SPECIAL!  The morning of the wedding, they sent out announcements saying they were married.  Folks would receive them while they were in Maine on their honeymoon.  LOVE IT!

Let’s just say that these two are adorable!  It was a gorgeous day, with two amazing people, whose love for each other was strong and beautiful.  Just wait until you see their pictures.

Click on the picture to enlarge – ENJOY!

Thank you again for including me in your wedding day!!!   I’m so glad our paths crossed and I hope they do again in the future.  All the best and all my love.
